Connecting with your baby before and after birth

Using Video Interaction Guidance (VIG)

"I really enjoyed the VIG experience. It made me notice things with my baby that I wouldn't have noticed myself"

VIG is about understanding your baby's emotional world

Noticing the most meaningful moments

Video Interaction Guidance (VIG) captures moments of meaningful, two-way communications between parents and babies. These back and forth interactions are incredibly important for a baby's social and emotional development.

VIG is based on extensive evidence. A trained VIG practitioner (called a “Guider”) films short everyday interactions between a parent and their baby. The practitioner analyses the film for special interactive moments (called "attuned interactions"). These are then shared back with parents.

VIG is used in more than 15 countries by at least 4,000 practitioners in a variety of different ways. In the UK, the quality of VIG delivered by practitioners is regulated by AVIGuk - find out more about VIG here.

Seeing in detail subtle communications

VIG helps you to see special moments in more depth. The clips and still photos can also help to understand how you and your baby may be feeling.

VIG only focusses on positive interactions going on between you and your baby. These subtle, social responses are going on between you, even on a difficult day.  We often call these “micro moments”. By capturing these, VIG can make you aware of things you might otherwise not have noticed.

"VIG has been an amazing experience. I loved it. I think having a baby is life changing and wonderful, but no one tells you how hard it can be. It was a shock to the system and it is easy to see the negative. What stood out about VIG is you do have moments and you can see in the video that you do get it right."

Noticing your baby during pregnancy

Even before birth you will be experiencing moments of connection with your baby such as noticing kicks and movements. VIG can be used to see yourself connecting with your baby which can build confidence. Video clips can slow down special moments with your unborn baby. This can work particularly well during the last 3 months of the pregnancy.

Some couples choose to video talking about things they have noticed about their unborn baby or their hopes and dreams for the future. An existing sibling could also be brought into the video.

Some expectant parents decide to be videoed when they are reading a book or singing to their unborn baby.
